Justin Egge began working for Academic Approach in the summer of 2011. He spent four years as a one-on-one tutor, two of which were spent tutoring remotely while he attended graduate school. In the summer of 2015, Justin transitioned to the role of Associate Director upon his return to the Chicagoland area. He was soon promoted to Lead Director until moving into his current position as Regional Director of One-on-One. With his experience as a tutor, he is excited to continue to guide and collaborate with North Shore families to help ensure and encourage students to reach their academic goals.
Justin earned his M.T.S. degree from Duke University and his M.A. degree from Trinity International University. Prior to his graduate education, Justin received a B.A. in Theology and B.S. in Biology from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. He has been fortunate to have an academic career which has afforded both the time and space to think deeply about education’s purpose. He is glad to bring with him this inquisitive hunger for knowledge and complexity, which motivates and animates his days at Academic Approach.
What aspect of education or teaching are you most passionate about?
“I remember working with a student who was preparing for the AP Biology exam. We were covering plant anatomy and physiology—perhaps the least favored topic within the discipline. Initially, it was evident that he wanted to simply memorize the material and survive any questions the AP test may throw at him. After we spent time with the material and he learned the intricacies and nuances of the content, however, he said, “plants are actually pretty cool.” While, yes, a seemingly benign statement, his engagement and appreciation of the subject matter indicated the change I hope to invite from all students—to delight in the process of discovering, learning, and knowing.”
