Digital SAT

The SAT is digitizing—and Academic Approach is here to guide students and families through the transition. Whether your student needs a quick crash course to prepare for the digital PSATs this fall or wants to start prepping for the digital SAT in Spring 2024, our team is ready to help students excel on the SAT.

Digital SAT Overview

The SAT suite of exams (SAT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9) is changing! The digital PSATs will rollout in Fall 2023 and the first digital SAT will be administered in Spring 2024.

While the tests will continue to assess vital skills in reading, writing, and mathematics and continue to be scored on a 1600-point-scale, the new tests will be:

Reading and Writing

The newly-combined Reading and Writing section is made up of two modules. Each module features 27 multiple-choice Reading and Writing questions (each with their own passage) that test students’ ability to determine words in context, utilize textual evidence, make inferences, and abide by the conventions of Standard English and grammar.

Mathematics

The Math section is made up of two modules. Each module features 22 multiple-choice and student-produced response Math questions that test students’ understanding of algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, and advanced math topics. Students are allowed to use calculators throughout both Math modules.

What's Changing?

Well, as its name implies, the digital SAT will be digital. Students will take the exam via College Board’s testing application Bluebook. The test will also be shorter and adaptive (scroll down for more information on what adaptive testing means) and feature some changes to the Reading and Writing content. Additionally, students will now be able to use a calculator on the entire Math section.

What's Staying the Same?

What does it mean that the digital SAT will also be adaptive?

The SAT suite will utilize a multistage adaptive testing model, which is vastly different from the linear testing model used prior. In this new model, each section (Reading and Writing; Math) will be divided into two separate modules (Module 1; Module 2). Within a section, Module 1 and Module 2 will have the same timing and number of questions.

What about the PSAT/NMSQT*, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9?

*the PSAT 10 is called the PSAT/NMSQT when taken during the fall of the student’s junior year to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program

Digital SAT vs ACT

The digital SAT and ACT differ in structure and scoring, in addition to testing format. The digital SAT is comprised of two sections (Reading and Writing and Math), each divided into two modules. In contrast, the ACT includes four mandatory sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science) and an optional Writing test. SAT scores (200-800 per section) are combined for a total (400-1600), while ACT scores (1-36 per section) are averaged.

Seems like it could be a straightforward choice, doesn’t it? Not quite!

The digital SAT vs. ACT decision is different for each student. Let our skilled consultants help you navigate all the factors. Together, we’ll help you make the choice that will most benefit your student.
