Why Tutoring in College Matters

Our motto at Academic Approach is “Tests are standardized. Students are not.” But what happens after a student achieves his or her ideal test score and there are no more standardized tests on the horizon? Can an Academic Approach tutor help an undergraduate on his or her academic journey throughout college?

The short answer is a resounding yes.

A Deeper Dive Into Academic Subjects

Though tutoring can focus on subject fundamentals within a given test form (ACT, SAT, AP exams, etc.), students can enrich their understanding of these subjects on a college level with tutor support. A college math course, for example, will likely challenge students with higher-level concepts delivered at a faster clip compared to their high school courses. To mitigate academic whiplash (“I have to complete that many pages of problems by next Tuesday?”), students can work with their established tutors to expand their knowledge base and hone their executive functioning skills. Students can keep pace with the rigor of college learning while also deepening their expertise with a given course or area of focus. A tutor can help facilitate that mode of learning from the very start of college.

What To Learn And How To Learn

It is crucial that students not only learn more within a given subject but also discover more about how they learn as individuals. An Academic Approach tutor either has already built a rapport with a continuing student or the tutor can readily develop this relationship with a new college student. In both cases, a tutor can help expand a student’s awareness of his or her learning styles, study habits, and time management. Working to better the methods by which a student learns can create a productive mindset to accomplish course work and foster intellectual curiosity. A tutor who is knowledgeable of the college experience can provide the right degree of mentorship as students find their own way through higher education. A tutor can help reveal more about how a student learns to better improve that student’s innate academic strengths.

New Rhythms in Learning

Tutoring in college, then, can have a more flexible structure for students. Whereas prepping for the ACT, for example, requires regular, regimented sessions to achieve a specific goal, college tutoring can be more open. Sessions with a tutor can focus on a specific test or assignment for a given class, or they can be more frequent to build a student’s organizational skills and approach for multiple courses or assignments. Overall, the role of college tutoring can be tailor fit for a student’s given needs, no matter how broad or specific. Academic Approach tutors are here to provide support in smoothing the sometimes challenging transition from high school to college in any way they can. Knowing such support goes beyond any one assignment or test can help students broaden their academic perspectives toward lifelong learning.

An Ideal Guide For the College Journey

The college experience will spark a student’s passion for intellectual pursuit. He or she will discover—through coursework, friendships with classmates, internship opportunities, and the like—how the arc of his or her learning can bend toward future careers or interests that are rewarding for a lifetime.

Though this journey is personal, it does not have to be done without a helpful guide. Academic tutoring need not end after high school exams. Far from it. In fact, Academic Approach tutors can aid in further cultivating a student’s success well into college and beyond. And with our virtual tutoring platform, we can truly follow students wherever in the country (or world!) they go. We are here for every step in the journey, or whenever a part of the journey needs help with navigation.

Though tests are standardized, student potential is realized, especially with college tutoring. A student will find that realizing his or her potential is all the more enriching while in conversation with a mentor who knows how far he or she has come.
